Marcus Willis & Lewis Burton Triumph in Sunderland $10,000 ITF Doubles

Second seeded British pair Lewis Burton and Marcus Willis claimed the Aegon GB Pro Series Men’s Doubles title at the Silksworth tennis centre in Sunderland on Friday.

Lewis Burton said it was good to “bounce back after a tough start” as the British duo beat the Swedish/Finnish pair of Isaak Arvidsson and Micke Kontinen 6-3, 6-2.

In a tight first set, which stayed on serve until the eighth game, Burton admitted “we got a lucky break” as they broke Kontinen’s serve to go 5-3 up. Burton proceeded to serve out the game as the Brits won the first set 6-3, which, the 22-year-old admitted was dominated by the Arvidsson and Kontinen.

In the second set, the first break of serve came in the very first game as Arvidsson was unable to hold on. It was one-way traffic from then onwards as Burton and Willis quick raced into a 4-0 lead.

Arvidsson and Kontinen held their next serves and made it 5-2, but the British pair weren’t to be denied as Burton held his serve to take the set and the game.

Although unsure of their plans for the season, Willis said the pair have “a few options” but have decided to “step up and play Challengers in Europe and America.”
