He works in the spontaneous, English figurative tradition in pastel, oil and watercolour. A Member of the Royal Watercolour Society, the New English Art Club, and Past President of the Royal Society of British Artists, Tom Coates was elected as the ninth President of the Pastel Society in 1993.

Coates studied at Bournville College of Art, Birmingham College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools between 1956 and 1964. He attended the Royal Academy Schools 1961 – 64 when Sir Henry Rushbury was Keeper and Peter Greenham Professor. He was awarded several prizes and Scholarships during his studentship.
